The book: LIEUTENANT STEPHEN POLKINGHORN DSC, RNR. Author: Peter Oldham Lt Polkinghorn was the commanding officer of HMS Peterel, a river gunboat, in Shanghai at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. He refused to surrender and HMS Peterel ship was sunk in the harbour.
He and the surviving members of his crew were taken prisoner. Her captain was Lt Cdr Columbus D. Smith, USNR. Peterel displaced tons, normally carried a crew of 55 and was armed with two 3″ AA guns and eight machine guns.
